Deadlock in violent KwaGuqa protest

All exit and entrance points to KwaGuqa were blocked by burning tyres, firewood, boulders, trucks and other items.

Everything came to a standstill during one of the worst ever experienced protests in KwaGuqa.

A truck which was forced to offload coal on the N4 Highway during a protest action which started on Friday, August 18.

The protesters had a running battle with the police as they blocked the roads and the highway. Trucks were used to block the N4 Highway to Pretoria and one of the trucks was forced to offload coal on the highway.

Cars were forced to make a u-turn on the highway only to find that the road via Schoongezicht was also blocked with burning tyres.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma issued a stern warning on the destruction of property and perpetuation of other criminal activities during service-delivery protest action.

The warning by the commissioner comes amid mayhem caused by the protest actions by community members of KwaGuqa which led to the arrest of 17 people in connection thereof.

It was reported that community members started trashing and destroying property, stoning vehicles, trucks and busses that were passing by, as a result of alleged dissatisfaction with service delivery and housing allocation issues.
