Dumpsite gets dumped with donations

Young kids that are forced to scavenge on rubbish dumps to survive, were given something sweet to smile about.

Shocking but true, millions of people in the developing world today survive by salvaging waste.

Sadly many of them are children.

On July 28 businesses in town along with the Witbank SAPS went and gave to some of these young kids that are forced to scavenge on rubbish dumps to survive, something sweet to smile about.

At the Dumping Site in Old Coronation, Sgt Jeanine Opperman said with a creaky voice, “It is very dirty and there is always a bad smell. I know there are very bad diseases that these people can catch here. I am afraid of just the thought of all the hazards and challenges these children have to face.”

The sad scene with broken glass shattered all over the dumps there was a sliver lining behind it all as the SAPS van stopped and welcomed the little ones with cupcakes.

Business man, Gerhard Smit (Pink Panther Night Club) along with Julie van Niekerk (Pick & Pay Klipfontein) and Lia Meyer from AGS Sela Church sponsored a hearty meal for unfortunate people. On July 28 at the Dumping Site in Old Coronation the community of eMalhleni showed that they care.

They took on the dirty paths, gathering all the people living between rubbish to go and get a nice hot meal.

“This project just shows our community that there are people that care. Our aim is to give youngsters a future to believe in, even with the smallest gesture,” Opperman added.
In the end it narrows down to one thing, “children belong in a place of safety and not on rubbish dumps.”
