Heavy sentences handed out to armed robbers

Joseph David Ndlovu (42) and Abdul Kadry (32) will spend their days behind bars after being found guilty of armed robbery.

Robbers broke into the safe at Ackerman’s in 2014.

Ndlovu was found guilty of two counts of armed robbery and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment on both counts. Kadry was also found guilty of both counts of armed robbery and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on both counts.

On April 28, 2014, the two men robbed Dunns Shop in the Central Business District. The robbery occurred at about 12:55 as employees were busy cashing up for the day. According to a witness’ statement to police the men barged in through the front door and held the cashiers at gunpoint, they instructed them to head to the rear of the business and to lie down.

They then robbed the business of R2 669 and stole the witness’ cellular phone.

On May 11 the two men again robbed another business, this time they robbed Ackerman’s situated in Saveways Crescent Shopping Centre on Mandela Drive.


A firearm and number of cellular phones were seized during the arrest.

The two men again gained access to the business and ordered staff to the canteen.

They then robbed the staff members of their cellular phones; they also took stock from the store and robbed the business of R12 500 which was kept in the safe.

Police responded to the distress call and arrived on scene minutes later, they arrested Kadry on scene. Ndlovu was arrested the following day at his home in Kwa-Guqa after police followed up on information they received as to his whereabouts.

The two men were linked to the robbery committed at Dunns Shop which was factored into their sentencing.

The two men were taken into custody and were convicted in court on August 15, 2016. They were sentenced in the Witbank Regional Court on October 6.
