Rewarded for hard work done

Certificates of excellence were handed out for a job well done.

Certificates of excellence were handed out for a job well done.

On Tuesday, July 11 at the Witbank Correctional Centre Hall the hand over took place.
Witbank Management Area of Correctional section held a ceremony to hand over certificates of excellence to 22 officials from SAPS and Witbank Correctional centre who formed part of the two teams responsible for the re-arrests of high risk escapees.

The two maximum offenders, Mduduzi Nkosi and Michael Cele escaped from Witbank Correctional Centre last year in November.

Fortunately Nkosi was apprehended in November while Cele was re-arrested in March this year.
The risks involved were very high as both offenders were serving life sentences for serious cases.

22 officials from SAPS and Witbank Correctional Centre received certificates on July 11 during a handover ceremony.

Area coordinator from Corrections Mr Nico Fourie applauded the brave officials and added that the courage and commitment that was displayed by the officials during the re-arrests was overwhelming and outstanding.

Colonel de Beer from SAPS said,

“High technology was used and the SAPS intelligence unit played a big role.”
“That although it was a risk, they prevented further crimes from happening by re-arresting the two,” de Beer continued.

Fourie said,

“The relationship between the SAPS and correctional service should be strengthened as both work to reach the same goal; ensuring a safer South Africa that is crime free.”
