Gas, there might be a possibility

A three year exploration project is set to start on eMalahleni’s doorstep.

According to Mr Nkululeko Louw, executive director and chairman of Corecode there are indications that there is gas just waiting to be explored on Farms Leeuwpoort and Driefontein.

“We will be looking for coal bed methane and natural gas,” Louw said.

Natural gas can be found in coal beds, oil fields and natural gas fields.

That makes both the farms ideal locations as the Leeuwpoort exploration area falls in the north of the old Transvaal and Delogoa Bay Colliery (T&DB Colliery), Coronation Colliery and Douglas Colliery, west and east of eMalahleni.

Driefontein exploration area falls in the west of eMalahleni just north of
Kwa-Guqa, east of Ferrobank within the eMalahleni Coalfield.

The exploration areas, and areas surrounding the planned exploration areas are dominated by grass lands and active coal mining as well as old rehabilitated opencast mining areas.

Louw is excited about the burning coal, limestone and also sandstone which he believes are clear indications that hidden beneath the earth’s surface is enough gas and coal bed methane to start a new journey in eMalahleni’s mining history.
