Three arrested for dealing in drugs

Three suspects were arrested for possession of an illegal substance, when they were searched by police.

Three suspects were arrested for possession of an illegal substance, when they were searched by police. The first suspect was arrested on Saturday, May 20 when a police officer was patrolling the Central Business District (CBD).

The arrests were made in Mandela Street, when the officer searched three men. He stated that only the third suspect had a cigarette box in his possession and inside was a small sachet of dagga.

Another suspect was arrested, also in the CBD on Friday, May 19. This was in Beatty Street when a police official patrolled the area in plain clothes. He came across a suspiciuos male and asked if he could search him.

The police official stated that the suspect did not want to co-operate and the search had to be done forcefully. Two small yellow plastic bags were found in his possession and the suspect told police that it was drugs.


The Local Drug Addiction Committee (LDAC) gathered for an operation in Old Coronation on Tuesday, May 16. Here they are with Sgt Janine Opperman, Ms Nare Knoana (social worker at Correctional Services), Ms Kefiwang Mnisi (SANCA) and Ms Thandekile Nhlambo (SANCA).

Another suspect was arrested for possession of drugs and also faces a charge of bribery. On Wednesday, May 17 police stopped a vehicle on the N4 highway, allegedly from Swaziland. A police official stated that when the driver of the vehicle approached him, he stated that things are bad. When police searched his vehicle, they found two bags full of dagga. The driver of the vehicle offered the officers R6000 to not arrest him.

A drug awareness campaign was held on Tuesday, May 16 when Sgt Janine Opperman, together with Ms Nare Knoana from Correctional Services and Ms Kefiwang Mnisi and Ms Thandekile Nhlambo from SANCA spoke to the residents from Old Coronation.
