A family home burned to the ground over the weekend.

The Masina family looked on as all their possessions burned within minutes after a gas bottle exploded on Friday, May 19.

“The mom, Joyce, said she lit the gas heater in their bedroom and was worried when the flame on the gas heater looked funny. She called her husband to take the gas bottle out of the house. They suspected the bottle was leaking. Before he could take the bottle out, it exploded. Luckily he escaped through the bedroom window,’ Ms Luzaan Lubbe, a neighbour said.

The rest of the family rushed outside and no one was seriously injured.

Several attempts by neighbours to get the fire truck to the scene were fruitless.

WITBANK NEWS went to the fire station in Ga Nala on Sunday and could not see one fire truck in the station.

Residents of the small Highveld town got together and donated clothes, food and blankets.
