Horrific accident claims 19 lives in eMalahleni

One family lost three of their children in this accident.

Four of the seven scholars that survived the horrific accident last week were hospitalized in eMalahleni.

The accident happened on Friday afternoon, April 21 when a minibus transporting school children collided with a truck and burst into flames on the R25 road between Bronkhorstspruit and Verena.

The scholars went to school in Guateng but they resided in Mpumalanga.
Nineteen learners as well as the driver of the minibus burned to death.
One family lost three of their children in this accident.


The horrific accident scene that occurred on Friday, April 21 claiming the lives of 19 school children.

According to reports, two scholars aged 13 and 14 years were admitted to Life Cosmos Hospital.
The 14-year-old was discharged on the same day whilst the 13-year-old remained in hospital after he sustained slight injuries and was discharged from hospital a few days after the accident.
One child went to Witbank Provincial Hospital and the other KwaMlanga.

Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza has conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims of the R25 road accident that claimed 19 lives.


Fire fighters going through the vehicle that transported the school children, making sure that no more bodies were inside the vehicle.

Premier Mabuza has further wished a speedy recovery to all those children who sustained injuries and have been admitted to hospital.

“Indeed it was a sad day in our province; I just cannot imagine the pain the parents of these children are going through. We convey our deepest condolences, their pain is our pain, and we will be with them during this difficult time in their lives. We would like to urge motorists to be extra vigilant on the roads by playing their role in order to assist to avoid human errors. They should constantly exercise caution,” said Mabuza

He added that government would continue to do its part in ensuring that all the roads are safe through maintenance and law enforcement.

“As a provincial government, we view accidents in a serious light because the loss of one life is one too many,” said Mabuza.
