Constables Checha Doctor Makua and Dumisani Piet Nkambule responded to a break-in at the Absa bank in Ogies.
As the police approached the bank, the robbers opened fire.

Nkambule was wounded in the arm and leg. Instinct took over and Makua returned fire and kept on firing until he ran out of ammunition. He then took his wounded partner’s weapon and kept on firing at the suspects.
While the bullets were flying around them Makua dragged Nkambule to safety.

Brigadier Leonard Hlathi, provincial police spokesperson said the suspects fled the scene without their loot.

“Police discovered that the villains gained entrance into the bank and blasted a safe,” Hlathi said.

However they could not blast through the safe’s thick walls. Police seized explosives on the scene.
