Trans African Concessions (TRAC) would like to announce a decrease in the number of accidents on the N4 Toll Route during the 2017 Easter weekend.
Thirty-two (32) accidents were recorded from Thursday the 13th of April 2017 to Monday the 17th of April 2017 – 25 of these occurred in South Africa and seven in Mozambique. This is a slight improvement from last year’s 33 and a notable improvement from 2015’s, 42 accidents.
The number of fatalities recorded throughout the route also decreased from five in 2016 – one (1) in South Africa and four (4) in Mozambique – to one (1) in 2017. This accident occurred on the 13th of April on the Ring Road near Mbombela/Nelspruit when a truck collided head-on with a sedan.
One of the key contributors to the decreased number of accidents along our route was the TRAC Easter Rescue and Road Safety Campaign. This annual project saw the bulk of Mpumalanga Emergency Services and TRACAssist teams, stationed at the Alzu Petroport in Middelburg, and smaller units deployed to strategic points along the highway. This initiative went a long way in promoting road safety as it boosted visibility of authorities and allowed road users to connect with them to access valuable information and knowledge on road regulations and safety.
In conclusion; although TRAC acknowledges the decline in road accidents this holiday period, we have no cause to celebrate. A live was lost, and we believe one fatality on our road is one too many. We do however thank all road users who heeded our call to practice road safety principles, because road safety is everyone’s responsibility and the N4 Toll Route will become safer and better as long as this philosophy is applied by all who use it.
