Municipality is cleaning house

A further 13 employees are on suspension pending the finalization of investigations

Over the past months six municipal employees who faced various charges have been dismissed.

A further 13 employees are on suspension pending the finalization of investigations.

In the latest round up of events an employee in the mayor’s office was suspended due to allegations which still have to be tested by a competent tribunal.

The employee was suspended last week after internal systems of the municipality picked up something which appeared to be amiss.

The employee was then placed on suspension to allow a full investigation to verify certain information.

During a closed council session in February, where all elected councillors were present, a decision was tabled to suspend the director of technical services. The allegations on which this suspension is based are now been investigated and a disciplinary process will follow.

Both the employee in the mayor’s office and the director of technical services will remain on suspension pending the finalisation of investigations on the alleged misconduct against them.

“The commitment of the Executive Mayor Lindiwe Ntshalintshali to act against all transgression and fraudulent activities within the Emalahleni Local Municipality is showing favourable results,” Mr Kingdom Mabuza municipal spokesperson said.

“The Mayor has already made significant progress in cleaning the administration and remain committed to continue a zero tolerance approach.”

Members of the public are encouraged to approach the municipality with information of any suspicion of corruption, theft and fraud.

The suspended employees’ names are being withheld until the investigation is concluded.
