Two dead, three injured in head-on collision

The Verena Road has claimed yet another two lives earlier this week.

The accident occurred on Sunday, March 19 at approximately 18:30 near the Klarinet informal settlement. A Silver Mitsubishi ASX and a white bakkie were involved in the head-on collision.

According to the police report it was unclear who was at fault. The drivers and the passengers of both vehicles were seriously injured. When emergency services arrived on scene, they pronounced the driver of the silver Mitsubishi ASX dead.

The passenger in the ASX sustained minor injuries, he was stabilized on scene and transferred to Witbank Provincial Hospital.

The driver and the passenger in the front seat of the bakkie sustained serious injuries and the passenger in the back seat sustained minor injuries.
Once the occupants of the vehicles were stabilized, they were all taken to Witbank Provincial Hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the bakkie remains in a serious condition in hospital, the passenger succumbed to his injuries in hospital and died.


The accident scene on the Verena Road that brought traffic to a standstill on Sunday evening, March 19.

Mr Mishipi Masha was one of the passengers and he is currently at home where he is recovering from his injuries.

“All I remember is that the vehicles collided, then there were flashing lights which were the blue lights from the police van and then I woke up in hospital. I have injured my pelvis and broken my shoulder. I am still in pain,” said Masha.

Mr S. Letswalo was also involved in the accident, he is currently still in hospital as he has fractured his leg and is in a lot of pain.

The driver of the ASX was formally identified as Mr Philamone Mashenga (57) and the passenger from the bakkie was formally identified as Mr Thabang Moya (21).
