Suspected hijacker beaten to death

After he failed to answer questions about the wheels, community members saw a suspected hijacked car.

According to Mr David Makgatloa, Vosman CPF chairperson he was woken up by a phone call in bed after patrolling some parts of Empumelelweni.

Makgatloa said while he was trying to sleep, the call sprung him into action. The call told him that a 35 year-old suspected hijacker was caught pushing car wheels at a sporting filed in Empumelelweni in the early hours of Sunday morning at about 02:00 on March 12.

It all started when community members were chasing a suspected housebreaker in the area in Extension 6. Once a whistle was blown, community members came to action. The suspect disappeared in the still of the night and they came across another suspect pushing car wheels. After he failed to answer questions about the wheels, community members saw a suspected hijacked car. Two wheels of the car had already been stripped off. He said his other three friends managed to run away.

Makgatloa was called and told that a suspect was being assaulted by members of the community. He called the police who came to the scene and also confirmed that a case of car hijacking has been reported and the car registration confirmed that it was the very same car. CPF members together with the police managed to put a stop to the assault and ambulance was called.

The suspect’s phone was used to call his relative who came along with his wife. According to Makgatloa, the ambulance took a long a time to arrive resulting in the suspect being confirmed dead after arrival of the paramedics.


CPF chairperson Mr David Makgatloa points to the car that was hijacked near Kromdraii Cemetery found near a sports field in Empumelelweni.

The police said the car was reportedly hijacked near Kromdraai Cemetery and the owner stays in Extension 18.

“Assault or killing of suspects was never a solution to crime problem. The station commander strongly criticises the action and mindset of this nature and said who ever was involved will face the full might of the law,” reads a statement from Vosman Police Station Brigadier Eric Masiya

Police have opened a case of murder and they are investigating. No arrests have been made.
