Man selling hijacked car on Facebook gets busted by police

“The car matched the one that was reported as a stolen vehicle so we followed the lead.”

Three weeks ago a man was hurt after having his car hijacked. But all those sleepless nights worrying about the whereabouts of his red Volkswagen Polo ended when the car was found at Dennilton on Friday, March 3.

The vehicle was hijacked on Friday, February 17 at Klarinet, Extension three. The 26-year-old man’s car was stolen in front of his gate by three suspects.

Col Lt Solly Thobejane said the car was spotted on a post on Facebook when a man was selling it for R60 000.

“The car matched the one that was reported as a stolen vehicle so we followed the lead.”

This follows after he bought it for R15 000 from someone else and the number plate was changed. Police posed as a customer and asked to meet with the buyer as they were interested in purchasing the car.

They met on Friday, March 3 in the afternoon and the man was arrested and charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle. He made his first appearance in court on Monday, March 6 and will remain in custody until his next appearance scheduled for Monday, March 13.

Col Lt Thobejane urges members of the public to please be careful when purchasing vehicles from people.

“Double check the information, also bring the documents to the police station where we will gladly assist in verifying if it is a stolen car or not. Rather be safe than sorry because if you are caught in such a situation you will be arrested. You are warned.”

He mentions that they are planning to make more arrests which will eventually lead to the hijackers. “I had lost hope as it was over two weeks that the car had been missing so I thought I was never going to find it,” said the man.

Once again police have come through for the community.
