Khubeka pleads not guilty

After Johnson Mduduzi Khubeka escaped from Witbank Correctional Services (Paxton) last year July, he was again arrested and appeared in court for the third time.

He appeared in Court B on Wednesday, February 8 and pleaded not guilty. Investigating officer, Constable Thapelo Malope said that the prisoner is back in a prison in Baberton, where he will stay until 13 March when he is to appear in court again for sentencing.

This followed after he was found at his girlfriend’s house in Kwaggafontein on January 24. Police followed a lead which led to his arrest. He was serving a sentence for murder and robbery and has been a prisoner at Witbank Correctional Services since 2006.


Johnson Mduduzi Khubeka appeared in Court B for the third time, on Wednesday, February 8.

Vusimuzi Geraald Skosana who also escaped with Khubeka, was re-arrested. He is currently serving a sentence of 39 years, which he received for murder and robbery. An extra three years was added to his sentence after he escaped custody on July 28 last year.

Magistrate Daleen Venter told him that he is not only a danger to society, but also to himself and letting him go was not an option.

He pleaded guilty to the charges against him and was taken back to a high security facility in Baberton after he wanted to appear in court and refused to hear his fate in camera.
