The war on drugs continues

“No leniency will be shown to those breaking the law by having drugs in their possession or selling drugs, no matter the amount of drugs you will be brought to the book,”

Just last week nine arrests were made for possession of drugs, one of which took place inside Paxton’s cells the other at its gates.

On January 21 wardens at Paxton Correctional Services performed a cell search in section C of the facility at about 06:00. They confronted one of the inmates, Thulani Maluleka and searched his locker which had not been locked.

Inside they found 196 pokes of dagga, on searching another locker they found a pair of socks concealing a ball wrapped in plastic. Inside this ball was 26 pinches of Nyaope, Maluleka admitted that the drugs were his and when questioned about the money for the drugs he claimed his accomplice Patric Maseko was in possession of the money – the money was handed over to the authorities by Maseko.

The second arrest at Paxton occurred when a prisoner was being transported from Witbank Magistrates Court to Paxton. On arrival at the facility the vehicle and inmate were searched. The inmate, Zimu Tshepo was found in possession of narcotics and the drugs were confiscated.

On January 19 police made two arrests for the possession of drugs, one of the suspects was arrested at the long distance taxi ranks in the CBD while the other was arrested in the CBD itself, the suspect found in possession of 10 pokes of dagga was also found to be an illegal immigrant and was subsequently charged with both criminal offences.

Three additional arrests were made on January 20, one of which took place at MNS squatter camp and the other two in the central business district (CBD). All three arrests were made for the possession of dagga.

On January 23 police searched a group of men sitting under a tree in Keats Street, Extension 8. One of the men was found in possession of a single poke of dagga and was taken into custody. Additionally while police were on patrol in the CBD they came upon a woman wearing a red shirt and hat, police stopped and searched the woman and found her in possession of dagga with the street value of R400. She was arrested and taken to Witbank Police holding cells.

“No leniency will be shown to those breaking the law by having drugs in their possession or selling drugs, no matter the amount of drugs you will be brought to the book,” said Captain Eddie Hall, Witbank Police communications.

Capt Hall further added that to date a lot of drug related arrests have taken place over the month of January.
