Unexpected help turns into ‘daylight-robbery’

A 54-year-old woman was scammed of R3 000 after she received some help at an ATM in Highland Mews.

A 54-year-old woman was scammed of R3 000 after she received some help at an ATM in Highland Mews.
On December 8 the woman went to the ABSA ATM in Highland Mews, Klipfontein to withdraw some money, unaware of the scam she was about to be tricked into.

Moments prior to her using the ATM a suspect approached the ATM and pressed the cash-send button making as if he was performing a transaction, he then walked away from the ATM.

The woman approached the ATM and attempted to insert her card into the machine with any success, the suspect approached the woman offering assistance and meanwhile stealing her card.

The suspect then pushed the cash-send button on the ATM while the woman was distracted he pretended to insert the card into the machine but instead slipped it into the folded money he had in his hand.

The suspect then pushed the cash-send button again at the ATM all the while hiding the woman’s card in his hand, he then reached over and pressed the language proceed button of the ATM and prompted the woman to insert her pin.


Police are searching for these two suspects in connection with theft at an ATM.

He then walked off as the woman attempted to make a transaction unaware that her card was not in the machine. The woman could not retrieve the card from the machine and instead decided to seek help inside the bank.
While inside the bank the suspect and his accomplice returned to the ATM and made three separate withdrawals of R1 000 each, stealing a total of R3 000 from the woman.

“The community is warned, never to use their pin in front of someone they don’t know, even if it is bank personnel,” said Capt Eddie Hall, Witbank Police communications.

Capt Hall added that the community is advised not to accept help from strangers as this may result in theft or the compromising of their account.

“Anyone with any information regarding this theft or the possible identification of the suspects must please contact Det Const Owen Simba on 072 313 0901,” said Capt Hall.

The 54-year-old woman was unavailable for comment at time of print.
