Problems at Khayalethu Primary School

The parents said they were angry because they were not informed that their children would be moved to another school.

Angry parents of children of Khayalethu Primary School met at the school to discuss the plight of their children.
The problem at the school, according to the parents started after their children were moved from the school to the nearby Vuma Primary School. The parents said they were angry because they were not informed that their children would be moved to another school. They said they were promised that another meeting would be held whereby a resolution would be taken.

“We held a meeting in December where we were told about the possibility of moving the children. We were also told we need to listen to Emalahleni FM for a date of a next meeting. We were surprised when we were informed that our children will be moved to Vuma without our permission,” said one of the angry parents.

Some said they have already bought a Khayalethu uniform and did not want to buy another as the uniforms of the two schools are different. It was not clear as to why such a decision was made without the consolation with the parents.

The parents later took a decision that they would sign a petition at the police as another attempt to resolve the issue or to reverse the decision. The parents also stated that they were unhappy about Vuma as the condition of the school was not good according to them.

It later turned out that the children in the Foundation Phase, Grade RR to Grade 3 would be sent to Vuma and Grade 4 to Grade 7 would be accommodated at Khayalethu.

SGB members said there were problems at Khayalethu as the enrolment of children at the school was said to be low and it was suggested that the children should be moved. She also mentioned that the circuit manager promised that they would be meeting with the SGB to inform them about the decision of moving the children but that was never done.

A meeting was later called whereby an explanation was made to the parents about the moving of the children. The meeting was attended by the principals of both schools and the unhappy parents.
