Thushanang fast becoming a dumping site

“We are tired of reporting this garbage to the municipality. They sometimes come and remove it and the people from other areas will start dumping again."

While a lot of people start the New Year with happiness, joy and hope some people in Thushanang started the year on a bad note.

The residents near Nkonjane Combined School have been living with garbage for a long time but this year some residents from other areas decided to dump their rubbish in the vicinity adding to the stench.

Illegally dumping near the RDP houses in Thushanang, residents living near the dumps are complaining.

According to Mr Johannes Makhubela who stays in the area, the dumping started a long time ago but it is getting worse every year and this year the icing on the cake was the dumping on New Year’s Day.

“We are tired of reporting this garbage to the municipality. They sometimes come and remove it and the people from other areas will start dumping again. It is getting worse and when we confront the people they threatened to beat us. Some of the dumping is smelly and rotten stuff, we a living like dirt because we cannot enjoy life outside our yards,” said Makhubela.

While members of Siyasenza Community at work are trying their best to keep the whole area of Kwa-Guqa clean and tidy some people are doing the opposite according to Makhubela.

Rubbish was dumped next to the people’s living quarters on New Year’s Day.

Makhubela further mentioned that some of the children even use the mine dumps to hide and to smoke drugs.

Ward councillor Western Kgomo promised that he will send a cabbage removal truck to collect the dumping and will also call a community meeting to warn people to stop dumping illegally in the area.
