Protestors stops traffic flow on N4

At 05:00 on Monday, January 9 protestors barricaded both the off ramps and the on ramps with burning tyres. There were reports of stones that were thrown at motorists.

Protest action on the N4 highway brought traffic to a stand still and motorist had to use alternative routes to get to their destinations earlier this week.

On Sunday evening, January 8 there was word that there could be possible protest action by Vosman. Motorists were warned to keep an eye out and to drive safely if they were travelling along the highway.


People waiting to go to work on the N4 highway on Monday, January 9, the highway was closed due to protest action.

At 05:00 on Monday, January 9 protestors barricaded both the off ramps and the on ramps with burning tyres. There were reports of stones that were thrown at motorists.

Eventually the road was closed off by traffic in both directions and motorists were told to use alternative routes.


Traffic was backed up on the N4 highway on Monday, January 9 towards the Vosman off ramp.

Later more back up from Witbank Police were called to help move protestors along.
Many people who needed to get to work could not as the roads were closed, the highway was covered with people standing waiting to get to work.

If no transport was available workers then decided to walk to work, until they eventually found transport.
By 09:30 the traffic flow was back to normal, the only signs of a protest were the burnt marks on the tar and that police kept a close watch on the protestors as they stayed stationed on the highway.


A truck was stopped by protestors and he was ordered to off load all his coal onto the road.

Protestors were once again protesting about jobs regarding Kusile Power Station.
Last year many strikes like this one occurred as a result of people looking for work at Kusile Power Station.
On Tuesday morning, January 10 a truck transporting coal was stopped by a mob of protestors who forced him to dump the coal onto the road.

The coal in the road stopped most of the motorists from travelling anywhere, until the coal was removed by residents living in the area.
