Police clamp down on drinking and driving

Police have made six arrests during operations, pertaining to drinking and driving as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.

Two of the six arrests were made at the road block on the N4 Highway close to Highveld Mall, while going through the road block both drivers were pulled over and found to be over the legal limit, they were taken into custody.

Four accidents were reported to have taken place over the weekend of December 9 to 11, in two of the four incidents the drivers were arrested for drunken driving and additionally charged with reckless or negligent driving.

On December 10 police attended an accident on the R544 in which a Honda Ballade, BMW and Toyota Hilux collided with one another, a case of reckless and negligent driving was opened at the police.

That same evening at about 20:00 police arrived on scene where a collision took place between a Ford Ranger and Toyota Quantum on Kiepersol Street, both drivers sustained minor injuries.

On December 11 the driver of a blue Nissan Datsun was arrested for drunk and driving and negligent driving, the driver had allegedly hit a cyclist on the road that morning at about 09:55. An eye witness said to police that they saw the cyclist waiting for the robot to go green when the Nissan Datsun skipped the robot hitting the cyclist. The cyclist is currently in hospital after sustaining multiple injuries including a head injury.

When police arrived at the scene of the accident that took place at about 06:15 in Watermeyer Street they were informed that the passengers of the Volkswagen Golf 6 involved in the accident, fled the scene with a cooler-box in hand.

The Golf 6 had allegedly collided with another vehicle. The driver of the Golf was detained by police and taken to hospital for blood alcohol level testing following the accident.

Police warn the public that there will be zero tolerance for motorists who fail to keep to the road rules, especially those found to be driving under the influence. They also caution the public to be safe on the roads this festive season.
