Social grant beneficiaries must be vigilant as the festive season dawns

As the festive season approaches the South African Social Security Agency is urging all social grant beneficiaries to be vigilant when they collect their monthly social grant payments.

As the festive season approaches the South African Social Security Agency is urging all social grant beneficiaries to be vigilant when they collect their monthly social grant payments.

Beneficiaries must ensure that they don’t fall victims to criminal offences. The fraudsters normally pose and pretend to be SASSA officials. Offering unrequested assistance and targeting mostly older people and people with a disability. Once they received their information or payment cards they are robbed. Pensioners and other grant beneficiaries are being targeted by thugs and scammers during the festive season.

All beneficiaries must ensure that they keep their PIN code or SASSA card secured and secret. Unless the person is registered as procurator to receive payment on behalf of the beneficiary. Vulnerable pensioners must be careful of deceiving relatives, their children or micro loan companies because they can withdraw the money. Negligence can make them go to sleep without food and cause a sorrow during the festive season.

If the beneficiaries have forgotten the pin code, they must go to the nearest SASSA office to reset it. If your card is lost or stolen you must immediately call the Help Desk at 0800 600 160 to put a stop on the card.
After collecting the money at the pay point you must put it at a safe place and ensure that no one is keeping their eye on you.

Do not allow any strangers to assist when withdrawing payments. Do not use ID or SASSA payment cards as security to get a loan from any money lender.

For more information contact SASSA’s toll free number: 0800 60 10 11 from 08:00 – 16:00 during week days Monday – Friday.
