Over 1 000 hands brought pen to paper as people voiced their disdain towards fireworks being prohibited in eMalahleni.

Last year the Emalahleni Municipality demarcated various areas for firework displays, these areas included Lynville Tennis court, Klipfontein Dam, Phola soccer field, Ogies soccer field, Thubelihle soccer field, Ga-Nala rugby field, and Pine Ridge soccer stadium, to name a few.

This year Mr Clive Hatch began a petition in September, this petition received over 1 000 signatures barring fireworks from being shot in eMalahleni and on Tuesday, November 8 the petition was handed over to the Emalahleni Municipality.

The cover letter explains that residents are against fireworks.

The petition will serve to show that residents are against the display of fireworks in their neighbourhoods and was signed by residents throughout the whole of eMalahleni.

Mr Theo van Vuuren previously said in an article featured in WITBANK NEWS that

“To totally ban it will just result in people shooting all over the city at a much larger scale as at present. We have however already started negotiations for this year with people selling fireworks, to only sell those with limited noise capacity. If we can achieve this, most of the problems will hopefully be addressed. The institutional model of the SAPS, CPF’s and municipality working together holds promise as well.”
