Thunderstorm causes havoc in KwaGuqa Extensions

A thunderstorms caused extensive damaged to houses, roads and other areas of KwaGuqa on Friday night.

Most damage that was caused by the storm on Friday, November 11, were roofs being blown off, roads damaged and trees falling down even road signs were blown away while other just fell down. Not only were damages reported at KwaGuqa Extensions but a big tree fell down in the CBD.

More than 14 shack owners had their shacks damaged by either roofs being blown off or having the entire shack falling down. In one instance a roof collapsed damaging two cars which were parked in the garage while the rented room’s roof of the owner’s place were blown away as well. Goods and furniture in the rooms were damaged. Three churches had their roofs blown off, one of which the whole structure just collapsed on the ground because of the heavy rain accompanied by the strong winds.

In Extension 12 water accompanied by sand came through houses even Cllr Timothy Lukhele’s house was not spared the damage. Roads in most of KwaGuqa were damaged extensively.

Some people were seen fixing their roofs while others hanged their blankets out to dry in the sun. Hardware shops were busy selling materials to the affected households.

“We were left homeless after the thunderstorm, our roof was blown off and we had to fix the roof. Our furniture was damaged and we had to ask our neighbours to spend the rest of the night. Our cars windscreens were damaged after the roof collapsed. We were so scared and the children were screaming. I have never seen something like this in all my life,” said one of the residents in KwaGuqa Extension 12.

There were reports that trees fell down and damaged an RDP house in Hlalanikahle and that trees falling down on houses near the Kromdraai plots as well.

Road signs on the N4 has also blown away due to the heavy thunderstorm. There were other reports that the disaster management teams helped more than 100 families affected by the thunderstorm giving out blankets and temporary shelters.
