More water wasted

An overflow of water has residents worried about the amount of water wasted on a daily basis.

An overflow of water has residents worried about the amount of water wasted on a daily basis.

A water leak has occurred just off Alpine Road in Highveld Park, this leak has reportedly been ongoing for at least four months with no intervention by the Emalahleni Municipality.

The water leak originates in the field across from 17 Alpine Street.

On October 13, Mr Brandus van Jaarsveld wrote to Mr Theo van Vuuren about the issue saying that after reporting the incident, municipal workers on three different occasions came out to the site but did not repair the leak.

“I measured the water wasted on the day and it amounted to a loss of 20 litres a second, which works out to a loss of 207 360 kilolitres of clean wasted water,” said Van Jaarsveld.

He added that by calculating it at the rate of R13/kl the municipality is at a loss of over R2-million for the amount of water wasted.

Water flows from the housing area into the open field in Highveld Park.

“This problem first started in May and I noted that the council’s vehicle visited the site but no repairs were made, by my calculations the total water lost since then is 282 000kl,” said Van Jaarsveld.

Mr Lebohang Mofokeng, communications liaison, was contacted with regards to the water leak on Thursday, October 27 and response was received that the municipality is looking into the matter.
