A huge milestone was achieved when the municipality launched a water purification package plant with the aim of providing clean water to all people. As it stands the plant is performing well and delivers consistently 5ML of high quality water daily. Due to the magnificent work, plans set to double the plant to 10ML have begun.

The water purification package plant was opened during the last week of July

Considering the performance and costs associated to the operation, negotiations with treatment company Nu Water, who owns and manages the plant is underway to ramp it up to 10ML before the end of the year. The estimated cost to the project is set at R35 million and with Nu Water funding a model it’s been developed to make it affordable.

“This has become critical as it can be seen from the recent shortages of water as the ground water levels are under strain and the reclamation plants seldom reach more than 50% of its contracted supply daily to the municipality,” read an email from the Municipal Manager, Mr Theo Van Vuuren.

Plans to have the water purification package plant doubled has begun. The plant was opened during the last week of July.

The plant was officially opened at point B during the last week of July. An initiative of this magnitude had not been done anywhere else, it was the first.

Speaking on the day of the opening Van Vuuren expressed his joy about the changes eMalahleni residents were about to experience stating that this was the beginning of an exciting project. Indeed it was and now we are seeing it unfold.

Once operational, this plant will also allow more water especially in areas such as Tasbet Park and Empumelelweni whereby the chronic outages in these areas will be reduced.
