Burglar caught on security camera

A burglary took place in Toerien Street and was caught on a security camera before fleeing with the stolen goods.

A burglary took place in Toerien Street and was caught on a security camera before fleeing with the stolen goods. However for the family this was not the last time they saw the thief who returned two days later.

On Friday September 23 a family went to a braai at about 17:00. The home owner apparently felt ill and they retuned home earlier than they would have at about 21:00.

As soon as they drove into the driveway they saw something was wrong. He got out of the car and carefully went inside to see what was wrong. Apparently the backdoor was forced open.

“He came back for a second load that same night and we chased him down,”

said the home owner’s wife who described what happened. He apparently got away in a white Fiat with another man and a woman who was with the suspect in the car.

A case was opened and the SAPS did come on Saturday to take their statement. However this was not the end of this terrible experience for them.

“He was so calm and he looked me right in the eyes,”

said the victim when she remembered what happened on September 25.

That Sunday she was in the kitchen and from the window she could see into her neighbours’ yard. The burglar who she clearly recognised from the security footage was standing in the back yard of her neighbours’ house she called for help but again the suspect fled and got away.

The whole experience has left the family on edge,

“This is all scary,”

said the victim honestly.

The Witbank SAPS are investigating the matter and the security footage will aid in their investigation but burglaries are a weekly occurrence both residential and at businesses. Sgt David Ratau from the Witbank SAPS said that burglaries are not spontaneous crimes committed by opportunists. They pick targets carefully and study their daily routines explains Sgt Ratau.
