A woman was rushed to hospital after being attacked by two pitbulls while delivering mail.
The incident took place on Wednesday, August 17 around 11:00.

Ntokozo Banda was at Harlekyn Street in Reyno Ridge when she was attacked by a male and female pitbull whilst delivering mail.

Sizwe, Nontobeko (Sibande), Enock and Ntombizodwa Mathibela assisted Ntokozo Banda when she was attacked by two pitbulls on August 17 at Harlekyn Street. As Enock was helping the woman he too was attacked by one of the dogs.

It is alleged that the gate was not completely closed and the owners were not home. She tried to run away but it was too late.

“I was in the kitchen when I saw this and I immediately rushed to open my gate so she can run to my yard but the dogs had already caught her,” said Gloria Bore, a resident that lives in the suburb.

Ntokozo Banda was attacked by two pit-bulls when she was going to deliver mail at Harlekyn Street. She is with Sylvia Selesho inside the ambulance who was one of the people that assisted the woman.

The dog was clipped to her for close to four hours before letting go. Another neighbour in the area Mr Enock Mathibela came to provide assistance. He tried to scare the dogs off by throwing stones but unfortunately the male dog went over to his side and attacked him.

“My hands and other body parts are injured but I am fine. I went to see a private doctor and I am currently under treatment,” said Mathibela.

Ntokozo Banda lays in the ambulance after being attacked by two pitbulls on August 17 at Harlekyn Street.

The woman who was also on scene Miss Sylvia Selesho who is a professional nurse nurse was on her way going home coming from work.

“As I saw what was happening I drove close to where they lay trying to scare the dogs. The problem with pitbulls is that once they bite you, they never let go,” said Selesho.

The dogs eventually ran off and left Banda and Mathibela on the ground. Selesho mentions that she fears that the dogs will bite someone else as they are vicious.

The police and various ambulance services were on scene to assist. Emergency services transported the woman to Emalahleni Private Hospital (EPH).

This tragedy saw the community come together to assist the two people that were hurt. Help came from Sizwe, Ntombizodwa and Nontobeko Sibande Mathibela.

Manager of EPH Miss Valerie Shanahan said that the patient had improved dramatically. When Banda was admitted she had multiple dog bites on her hand and leg and was immediately placed under high care.

“She was not in good shape when she came in but she is fine now,” said Shanahan.

Banda has been discharged from hospital and is grateful to the hospital staff for the help she received.

“Both dogs are safely in the custody of the Witbank SPCA,” said Miss Natalée Pretorius, manager of Witbank SPCA.

The owners of the pitbulls could not be reached for comment by the time of going to press.
