A student appeared at the Kriel Magistrate Court after stabbing another learner, both of them are 17-years-old.
The learner made his first appearance on Wednesday, August 10.

This follows after a fight between the two learners erupted leaving the other dead.
The incident took place on Friday, August 5 where it is alleged that the incident took place in the afternoon while the learners were waiting for a bus to go home after school.

As the fought continued between the two groups, the Grade 11 learner intervened. He grabbed a knife on the ground and stabbed the learner who was standing behind him.

The student who was stabbed was rushed to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

“I am surprised at what he did, the two went to the same Primary. I know him to be someone who is friendly. I do not know what could have led to this,” said someone who knew the learner that stabbed his peer.

Reitspruit’s community leader Mr Joseph Nzimande was shocked and extremely bothered by the incident.

“I am very concerned about this. Different departments must come together so we can find a way forward for both families,” said Nzimande.

The case has been postponed to August 24 awaiting a decision from the Director of Public Prosecution. The learner remains in the care of his mother.
