Procurators caring for older persons and people with disabilities receiving social grants

If an older person or person with disability is too old or sick to go to a pay point to collect his/her social grant payment, he or she is allowed to choose someone (Procurator) to receive the social grant on their behalf.

The older person or a person with disability has a full right to change the procurator when he or she feels that the grant is being spent without his/her permission. Identity document of the beneficiary and of a new procurator must be produced at the SASSA office.

South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is encouraging older persons and people with disabilities to report immediately to the nearest local office when a procurator is misusing their grant. Procurators must stop misusing older persons and people with disabilities socials grants because they are violating their rights and it is illegal.
SASSA will protect older persons and people with disabilities from all types of abuse.

They are welcome at SASSA offices at any time to report all their complaints regarding their social grants .Older persons and people with disabilities must utilise their social grants responsible for basic needs in a fight to minimise poverty. Family members are encouraged to assist social grants beneficiaries for a good course instead of intimidating and misusing the money.

Social Grant for Older Persons Requirements: Must be 60 years; spouse must comply with the means test; must not be maintained or cared for in a State Institution; must not be in receipt of another social grant for him or herself; must submit a 13 digit bar coded identity document
