The incident occurred on the evening of May 4 when the 47-year-old woman residing in Klarinet Extension 7, sought a lift from the petrol station along the Old Middelburg Road to Middelburg.

A maroon Volkswagen Golf 3 pulled up to the garage and its driver offered the woman a lift to Middelburg, in the car were two men.

The woman gladly accepted the lift, once they passed the railway bridge crossing, the driver of the Golf pulled the car over to urinate in the nearby brush.

According to the woman’s statement the man returned to the vehicle wielding a firearm and pointed it at her, the other suspect searched her bag and took her belongings, he then forced her to lie down in the back of the car as they did a u-turn and drove back towards eMalahleni.

The car stopped alongside the road and the suspects took the woman out into the nearby bushes where they proceeded to rape her, they left her alone and abandoned in the field and returned to their vehicle and then drove off.
The woman was able to get to her feet and sought help at the nearest house where she found help and was taken to the police station where she opened a case of armed robbery and rape.

“Community members are requested to stop hitchhiking and use recognised public transport for their own safety,” said Capt Eddie Hall, Witbank Police spokesperson.
