At 05:00 Mathapelo Maphosa and Noah Sindane were woken up by the loud screams of their five-year-old daughter Zinhle saying she was burning.

The two girls Zinhle and Duduzule (nine) were sleeping in their bedroom when their house was left in ashes after a fire erupted.

The incident took place on April 11 at a house located at Madinani Street in extension 4. Maphosa says she does not know what could have caused the fire but suspects it is a plug.

“When we went to bed on Sunday, there was no electric so I suspect when it came back on Monday morning it caused the fire,” said Maphosa.

Sindane rushed to their daughters’ room after hearing the loud screams to rescue the children from the blazing fire but fortunately Duduzile had already escaped leaving Zinhle in there. Noah was burnt on the head and face whilst Zinhle was burnt on the head and ears.

“They went to the clinic to get medical attention and are recovering well,” continued Maphosa.

Everything in the house was burned to the ground from items such as their clothes to their furniture and personal documents.

“My daughters’ uniforms and all school material are in ashes but they are both back at school,” said Maphosa.

She further explained that even though she lost everything, she is grateful to be alive.

“Life is more important, everything else can be replaced. The neighbours were of good help, I truly appreciate their help in coming with their buckets to come assist us in extinguishing the fire. We are also thankful to all the donations we have been receiving thus far,” said Maphosa.

She concluded by stating that she does not want to move, but will renovate her home as the children are used to the environment and school is close by.
The municipality did not reply by the time of going to press.
