Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe have applauded the fining of a prominent soccer player who was arrested for speeding.
Nhlanhla Brilliant Khuzwayo was arrested by Mpumalanga traffic officers on Easter Monday, March 28 on the N3 Road between Heidelberg and Welge Toll Plaza for exceeding the speed limit of 120 km/h by 163 km/h in his BMW.
After appearing at the Balfour Magistrate Court on Thursday March 31, Khuzwayo was fined an amount of R10 000 and released on warning after pleading guilty to charges laid against him.
MEC Vusi Shongwe has welcomed the outcome by the court saying that no one should be above the law regardless of their status.
“We will not stop at any chance to enforce the law and we will ensure that all law breakers equally face the full might of the law without any fear or favour. These cases must not take forever to be finalized and must serve as a warning to other law breakers that we are serious about road safety,” he said.
He added that speeding was among the biggest contributors of road crashes; therefore it was required that traffic officers hit on irresponsible and unbecoming habits very hard without any mercy in order to change bad driver behaviour.
“We must do this in order to protect innocent lives that are lost due to reckless, drunk, speeding and irresponsible drivers on our roads,” he added.
Meanwhile, during the Easter weekend, four other motorists were also arrested for speeding in operations that took place in the province.
