Suspect turns himself in after fatal stabbing

A man was apparently stabbed to death and shortly after the alleged suspect turned himself in to the police with the alleged murder weapon in hand.

At about 03:00 on March 6 two patrolling police offers received a dispatch from the control room about a possible murder in Klarinet. The officers quickly reached the scene and found the murder victim face down on the ground with a wound on the left side of his neck.

He was declared dead by paramedics on the scene.
A witness apparently told the police that the victim was stabbed.

In a surprising turn of events the alleged suspect approached the police while they were talking to the witness and turned himself in. He was arrested and charged with murder.

The investigation revealed that the suspect and the deceased got into an argument that arose from personal matters between the two men. After the accused came forward he allegedly told police that it was in self defence. According to him the victim allegedly confronted him with a knife in hand therefore the accused went to his house to fetch a knife to defend himself. The accused was stabbed in the abdomen and apparently retaliated. Police found a second knife on the crime scene and after the accused came forward the police took him to the hospital to get stitched up.

The deceased Maduna Lofana has been identified by his family. As the police delve further in to the investigation, the accused was set to appear in the Witbank Magistrates Court on March 7.
According to crime stats SA 830 murders were reported in Mpumalanga in 2015 which has been steadily decreasing since 2004 when it was over 1000 cases.
