House burned in Empumelelweni

Mr Mehluko Ngwenya of Empumelelweni is confused and desperate after his three roomed house burned recently.

He said he was out working as a driver and neighbour called to tell him his house was on fire, on Friday, August 21 in the afternoon. Neighbours tried to extinguish the fire and they were helped by fire engines that came to their rescue but the damage had already been done.

According to Mr Ngwenya he had a set of six pots, a cupboard, coal stove, gas stove, glasses, dishes, beds, a headboard, blankets, curtains, a closet, three-days savings money which was about R3 000, cell phones, a lap top, amplifier, two big speakers, three generators, clothes, a washing machine, gas fridge, a television set, a decoder which was only three years old in his house. According to Ngwenya the worth of all the goods is estimated to be more than R40 000.

“I lost everything that was in the house, it took me many years to work for all these things and now they are all gone in a split second and it is back to square one.”

Ngwenya stated that he was at a loss for words and was trying to come to terms with what has happened. Even the thought of the cause of the fire is unknown, Ngwenya has his own suspicions. Police has opened a case of arson.
Committee members of Empumelelweni indicated that they were concerned about shacks burning in their area and they will try to bring awareness to the community to come up with solutions to stop this from happening.
