Students completed their Social Auxiliary course

According to Glencore, South Africa is experiencing a variety of social problems which range from a high rate of unemployment, high crime rate, orphans and vulnerable children, HIV/AIDS, extreme poverty and others.

In response to, and as one of the intervention strategies to overcome the above mentioned social ills and challenges, Glencore saw a need for Social Auxiliary Workers. One of the national priorities in South Africa is to address the many social development problems prevalent amongst individuals, families, groups and communities, thus Glencore’s involvement.

The overall objective of this training project is to capacitate unemployed youth with relevant skills for Social Auxiliary Work, thereby addressing the skills shortages. In three years Glencore has managed to train a number of qualifying unemployed youth from disadvantaged backgrounds for Social Auxiliary Work (a total of 90 learners in three years). This has been carried out through an accredited service provider, Zigna, which meets the requirements set by Education Training Qualification Assurance which is the body under SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority). The training provided is also in accordance with the standards and curriculum approved by the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Welfare and Training Authority (HWSETA) for NQF Level 4.

Forty students have completed the training over a 12 months period and took the platform to accept their HWSETA certificates during the graduation ceremony that was held at Kwaguqa Learning Centre recently. Their course was sponsored by Glencore.
