Water pipe burst exposes deadly cable

A 22kVa cable was exposed after a backactor attempted to dig up the soil around a burst water pipe near Klarinet.

The break in the pipe occurred on Monday, July 13.
Locals queued up to take home bucket loads of water that was being wasted due to the break, which was believed to be the result of bad maintenance.

The break in the pipe was tended to however this left the area waterless for at least two days, not to mention exposing the cable which by law should be at least 1.5m underground and not 20cm from the surface.
The cable is believed to be the main supply to Klarinet which also left the local businesses without power including the abattoir owned by Mr Kobus Pieters.
“The connection should be done properly and the municipality is obligated to supply power to the community of Klarinet since it was the municipality that settled them there,” he said.

He commented further on the shallow cable, that it was a threat and questioned what would have happened if someone hit it with a pickaxe.
Mr Godfrey Malesela, a local businessman said that without electricity the community cannot cook, and now with no water they can’t wash or clean either.

The power has been off since Monday morning, the water was reportedly turned back on late Tuesday morning.
