Audio: Shots fired during heist, one policeman in ICU

An armoured vehicle was robbed by heavily armed gunmen who shot and wounded a police officer while he gave chase to the escaping gunmen on the R555.

The robbery took place last night on July 13 at approximately 21:30  in Gordon Road opposite the petrol station.

Investigators and emergency personnel blocked off the road and searched the area for bullet casings and other evidence. Over 20 rounds were fired and several passing vehicles were struck however no other casualties were suffered during the shootout.

“When we heard the gunshot we just ran inside,” said an employee of the nearby petrol station. The robbers attacked the armoured vehicle with semi automatic weapons.

The Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Witbank 911 were also on the scene to assist with traffic flow and some of the witnesses were treated for shock.

“The policeman that was shot is currently in ICU in a hospital in the eMalahleni area and in a stable condition,” said Sgt. David Ratau communications spokesperson from Witbank SAPS.

The suspects are still at large and escaped with an undisclosed amount of money.
