What is World Population Day?

World Population Day is an annual event, observed on July 11 each year, which raises awareness of global population issues.

This day was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme way back in 1989.

World Population Day was inspired by the public interest in Five Billion Day on July 11, 1987 which is approximately the date on which the world’s population reached the five billion mark.

For more than 20 years, World Population Day has marked the significance of population trends and related issues.

A new year brings new World Population totals. According to the Census Bureau’s annual projections, the United States will enter 2015 with 320,090,857 people while planet Earth overall will have more than 7.2 billion living souls on it.

In 2015 the world overall will add 4.3 people every second and lose 1.8 people during that same time frame.

In the world a birth takes place every eight seconds and one death every 13 seconds in the world.
