A weekend of wrecked metal

The roads over the recent weekend did not see the usual hustle and bustle due to the school holidays, however there was still serious collisions on our roads.

Between Sunday evening July 5 and Monday morning July 6 these collisions occurred on the N4 and R555 towards Ogies where one person died.
According to witnesses a medium sized flatbed truck was travelling towards Ogies while the driver of a black BMW was travelling towards eMalahleni. It is unclear what caused the driver of the BMW to swerve into oncoming traffic in front of the truck, but when it did happen the driver of the truck did not have enough time to react and the momentum of the truck carried it right over the car. The driver of the BMW was declared dead on the scene by paramedics and the truck driver was transported to hospital. The driver of the black BMW has not yet been identified.

A driver for a reliable towing company said that they have been busy since 02:00 on Monday morning going from one accident scene to another. They towed almost six vehicles that evening. Several vehicles crashed into tyres placed in the middle of the road near Highveld steel. No fatal injuries were sustained by any of the victims, but they were taken to hospital.
Another collision on the N12 caused a temporary obstruction on the road in the early hours of the morning, however according to Witbank 911’s response team no one was injured.

With mist being a concern for motorists on the Highveld, Trac N4 has a few helpful hints to keep in mind, should a person find themselves driving through thick fog. “Summer or winter, but particularly in the colder months, fog is a real hazard on the Pretoria to eMalahleni/Witbank stretch of the N4, especially from early evening to early morning. We recommend that you increase your following distance, reduce your speed, switch your vehicle’s lights on and use road markings and lines to guide you. Most importantly, be considerate of other drivers and remain patient,” advises the Trac assist team. To get help from a TRAC rescue team nearest to you dial 0800 8722 64 or 881 4444 in South Africa
