Left for dead by motorist

A six-month-old puppy was left for dead along the side of the road as the motorist who hit it drove off.

“He stopped his red 4×4, got out and just moved her over to the side of the road and then drove off. She has a collar, she is someone’s pet,” said Ms Ester Muller, a witness of the ordeal.
Muller was driving in Clarendon Street after dropping her son off at school on Friday, May 29 when she saw the 4×4 hit the dog and heard the dog’s screams. She immediately turned around and found the dog lying alongside the road.
“The worst of it is that there were at least five cars driving behind him and not a single one stopped to help the dog,” she said.

Another driver stopped and assisted Muller.
“She stopped on the opposite side of the road and rushed over to me, with her help we managed to get the dog wrapped into a blanket and loaded into my car. Liesl suggested that I should take the dog to the vet in Klipfontein,” said Muller.
Muller took Ms Liesl Rohm’s advice and took the pup to Klipfontein Animal Clinic. At first look it was suspected that the pup had suffered from possible spinal and hip injury.

Dr Dawie Havelaar and his assistant Jantjie Tau tended to the Labrador cross. The pup was given an injection to minimise the pain, she was also given a sedative later that day prepping her for the X-ray.
The X-ray showed that she had suffered from a pelvic and femur-neck fracture.
“She will need to undergo orthopaedic surgery, we have done everything we can for her at this point,” said Dr Havelaar.

Muller visited the pup again later that Friday afternoon to see how she was doing.
“I was worried for her and called on Saturday to hear how she was. I was told that there might be the possibility that she will be put down if the injuries are to serious, fortunately that isn’t the case,” said Muller.
Over the weekend the pup was given anti-inflammatories and plenty of cage rest.
“We will have to see how her recovery progresses but she must see an orthopaedic specialist,” said Dr Havelaar.

On the bright side the pup is eating well and drinking enough fluids, when visiting her kennel both her bowls were licked clean empty. She wagged her tail for Dr Havelaar, recognising a friendly familiar face.
“The owner might have been away for the weekend, hopefully they see she is missing and come forward to collect her, we can’t keep her here indefinitely,” said Dr Havelaar.
