Video: A crane too high a bridge too low

A municipal truck fitted with a crane collided with a bridge on the N4 crossing Jellicoe Street.

The accident occurred on May 15 at about 10:30 when a truck mounted with a crane attempted to pass under the N4, however the crane was not lowered, in fact it was fully erect.
When the truck attempted to pass under the bridge it got stuck underneath it as the crane caught on the bridge, scraping as the truck continued to move forward.

The truck was lifted off its front wheels when the crane wedged itself under the bridge, at the same time some of the hydraulics on the crane were damaged.
The Traffic Department arrived on scene and diverted traffic by blocking off two lanes towards Eskom Park, splitting the traffic into two lanes in the oncoming lane.
When asked what had happened, the driver of the truck simply said, “I don’t know,” and avoided further questioning.

A municipal official later arrived on scene and began instructing the truck’s passenger on how to lower the crane.
The truck was set back on four wheels and the process of slowly inching the crane into the rested position began.
The driver’s details were taken by traffic police before the municipal truck was driven off from scene and traffic was back to normal.

Emalahleni Municipality was asked for comment regarding why the crane was not initially in a rested position and why the bridge has no height restriction warnings, they however did not reply.
