A couple from Middelburg were involved in a serious accident at the Middelburg N4 Plaza and they remain in a critical condition.
A white Renault Sandero was travelling from eMalahleni towards the Middelburg N4 toll plaza on Friday night, May 1 at approximately 19:30 when it collided with the back of a stationary truck.

Mr Willie Els (56) and his wife Yvonne were in a white Renault Sandero.
The couple reside in Middelburg and Yvonne works at Midmed Hospital at reception.
Allegedly the white Volvo truck and trailers just pulled off the apron at the Middelburg N4 toll gate. According to the passenger of the truck, it had broken down.

The driver of the truck, Mr Sheltan Muvirimi, left the truck there as he went to buy cables to fix the truck.
It is still unclear how the accident happened, but Els crashed straight into the back of the truck.
The passenger of the truck heard a big bang and felt how the truck shook.
He climbed out to see what had happened, and noticed the Sandero had collided with the back of the truck.
Emergency services responded to the accident immediately at the plaza.
“A medic on scene identified my mother-in-law and he also knew her daughter who also works at Life Midmed Hospital, that is how the family got to know about the accident,” said the son-in-law Mr Joggie Smit.

The couple sustained serious injuries and were taken to Midmed Hospital where they were stabilized and then transferred to Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.
“They are still both on life support, my father-in-law sustained serious head injuries and my mother-in-law has severe lung injuries. That is all we know so far,” continued Smit.

The couple has two daughters Roelien Els and Hermien Smit, these two are being strong for their parents to make a full recovery.
Messages of support and prayers poured in on Facebook for the Els family.
