Former Hawks captain arrested

A former Hawks captain suspected of being involved in the R107-million heist which took place in eMalahleni last year, has been arrested.

Bhekani Welcome Gcabashe was arrested at his home in Bronkhorstspruit on Wednesday, April 22 by the Hawks Investigative Team and members of Task Force.
“Another team comprising the Technical Operations Management Section’s operatives also hit one of his lavish houses in Belfast. In both operations, members managed to seize items which would assist in the investigation,” said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).

Gcabashe, a former captain who was previously attached to the Mpumalanga Organised Crime Unit, resigned in 2011.
He made a brief appearance in Witbank Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, April 23 and was granted R20 000 bail on condition that he hand over his passport, that he would not interfere with witnesses, and report at Bronkhorstspruit Police Station once a week.

Gcabashe’s arrest brings the total number of arrests to 22 since the investigations started shortly after the robbery on April 27, 2014 in which a group of armed gunmen raided the SBV depot situated in the industrial side of Klipfontein, eMalahleni.

All the suspects, including Gcabashe, will appear on June 10.
