Soccer star arrested for attempted robbery

One of the three suspects in the cash-in-transit robbery in February in Ogies, was arrested in Gauteng for allegedly attempting to rob a truck carrying cigarettes.

The suspect, a former Bafana Bafana and Premier Soccer League player, was arrested for allegedly attempting to rob a truck carrying cigarettes in Boksburg North.

The player, who can’t be named until he appears in court, was arrested along with 10 others in an intelligence-driven operation.
According to a well-placed source, the player was arrested on the spot before his gang could allegedly pull a heist on an armoured vehicle. They were found with a military-grade signal jammer in the car.
The player appeared in court and was released on R15 000 bail.

It is further understood that he and four Zimbabweans were arrested after they were allegedly found in possession of stolen goods worth R4,2 million in 2011. At the time he was out on bail for a similar incident.
For the latest incident, the soccer star appeared in Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, April 17. The case was postponed to April 28 for further investigations and the accused have been kept in custody.
“The investigating team of the province and crime intelligence were following information of people who planned to hijack a cigarette truck,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela.

“They made contact with those 10 suspects and arrested them, before they could hijack the truck. Among them two were found wearing full Johannesburg Metro Police Department uniforms, and one of them is also a former PSL and Bafana Bafana player.”
The men were also found in possession of an illegal jamming device when they were arrested.
They face charges of armed robbery, impersonating police officers and being in possession of an illegal jamming device.
