Pump ‘seized’ or ‘stolen’ by police?

Two police constables appeared in Ogies Magistrate’s Court for theft and defeating the ends of justice.

On Wednesday, April 14 the two constables, aged 32 and 28 years old, appeared in court.
It is alleged that the duo attended a complaint, where the complainant reported that his water pump was stolen. He then requested that the two police constables accompany him to a certain man, who he heard was selling water pumps, to confirm whether it was the one belonging to the complainant.

Upon arrival, it is alleged that the complainant stated that the pump was not his but the police constables seized it, together with a welding machine.
The constables then told the man who was found with the items, to bring proof of purchase then they would hand the items back to him.
On Monday, April 10 the man went to the police station with the proof of purchase to claim back his belongings, but it was discovered that the items were not recorded in the exhibit register.
A case of theft was opened by the complainant for investigation.

On further investigation, it was discovered that the police constables took the items and they were arrested on Monday, April 13.
They were released on R1 000 bail each and the case was postponed to May 18 pending further investigation.
