More than 1 000 vehicles impounded

It is reported that more than a thousand vehicles were impounded during Easter holidays.

After the unveiling of the 2015 Easter Arrive Alive campaign in Dwarsloop (Bushbuckridge Local Municipality) on March 27, the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport staged a series of law enforcement operations aimed at promoting safety on the roads in order to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities during the Easter holidays.

During the law enforcement operations that were conducted throughout the province between Wednesday, April 1 to Monday April 6, 1078 vehicles were impounded. Out of the total, 1001 were minibuses whilst 77 were buses that were ferrying passengers without valid operating licenses amongst other offences. All the impounded vehicles were released after paying an admission of guilty at the police station by the driver ranging to an amount of between R2 000 and R2 500 depending on the fine issued.

A total of 5110 buses and minibuses were stopped and screened for compliance in terms of the National Land Transport Act, Act 5 of 2009.
The Department urges all motorists to be always vigilant on the road.
