Assault allegations against police officer

A family is alleging that their son was assaulted by a police officer while in police custody in Vosman.

According to the mother, her son Simphiwe Themba went to Extension 9 to collect money from a friend on Thursday, March 26 at about 10:00.
Simphiwe had parked his car in front of the gate of a police officer’s son’s home, who came and asked him to move the car.
An argument ensued following which Simphiwe was accused of breaking the other man’s arm, which he denied.

According to the family of the ‘injured man’, he went to Vosman Police Station to open a case of assault against Simphiwe and along the way met members of the Flying Squad, who accompanied him to the police station and after that arrested Simphiwe for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The ‘injured man’ allegedly phoned his father, who is a police officer, who rushed to the station. On arrival he allegedly went to the cell and assaulted Simphiwe who was injured in one eye and mouth.
“To make matters worse the police officer was off duty. Are police officers allowed to assault suspects while they are already in custody? I think this was just an abuse of power and his son has to prove that he was indeed assaulted by my son,” said the mother, who said she also confronted the police officer when she visited her son at the police station.
Apparently Simphiwe was given money by the friend through the window.

Captain Klaas Maloka said any allegations made against a member of the SAPS would be investigated.
