Three foetuses dumped and abandoned

Police were shocked to find a full-term baby with the placenta still attached to it, smothered in a black plastic bag.

The baby, found on April 3, is one of three aborted foetuses discovered over the Easter Weekend, bringing the total number of foetuses found to nine this year.
“When police arrived at Leeuwpoort dumpsite they found the fully grown baby boy in a black bag. We were informed that the rubbish truck, that had offloaded the waste had stopped at a clinic in eMalahleni, and then made its route through the city picking up general waste,” said Sgt Marius Etsebeth.

The other two foetuses were found at Paxton dumpsite.
Police recently held an operation along with the community to remove the large number of posters advertising illegal abortions, the poster had not been down for a week, when they were replaced by new posters.
“Most of the foetuses found on the dump sites are from these illegal abortions, there are over 300 posters littering downtown advertising the abortions,” said Sgt Etsebeth.

The modus operandi of these abortions will see an individual calling in and arranging for the abortion, which is not carried out in doctor’s rooms or surgical rooms, instead it is done in a standard household room.
“In most cases these ‘doctors’ use a knitting needle to damage the placenta, forcing the foetus to move down the tract where it is removed,” continued Sgt Etsebeth.

Etsebeth continued, “A number of mothers have passed away due to septicaemia (septic shock). This is from having an illegal abortion.”
In general foetuses are incinerated after a legal abortion has been carried out by private and public hospitals. When it comes to illegal abortions the foetuses are merely dumped alongside the road or placed in rubbish bags and sent to the dumpsites.

Police advise the community to rather go for a legal abortion than undergo illegal ones as it may result in infection and possibly death, another possibility would be to use contraceptives or condoms.
