Do you have a high risk car for theft?

Imagine realising your vehicle had been stolen. The spot where you had parked minutes earlier now is empty, that sinking feeling engulfing you is just impossible to explain in words.

Witbank SAPS are warning the public that there is an increase in the theft of motor vehicle cases over the past week in eMalahleni, Ga Nala, Ogies, Delmas and Sundra. In total 20 vehicles were stolen the past week.

According to the police, thieves are focusing on old model cars that include Golf, Toyota Tazz, Mazda 323 and Rustler models, Ford Lasers, Fiat Uno, Toyota Hilux bakkies and Toyota Quantums.
“Vehicles are stolen mostly at night in residential areas,” Capt Eddie Hall, police spokesperson said.
He mentioned Sectors 5, 3 and 2 as the areas most targeted by thieves.

He said make sure you do not leave your vehicle unlocked, even if you think you will be away for only a minute.
“Avoid stopping at remote places, park your vehicle in places that are well lit, and if your car is bumped from behind and you do not feel comfortable with the individual(s) involved in the situation, drive to the nearest police station for help.”
Capt Hall said a gear-lock is an affordable and a very effective anti-theft device.
“Make sure that all the doors and windows are properly locked when you park your car, do not leave your keys in the ignition, try to fit an alarm and/or anti-theft device in your car and have your keys ready in your hand as you approach your car, especially if they are difficult to find in your handbag,” Capt Hall urged.

Capt Hall said parking lots with a parking attendant or supervision are best, otherwise try to park in locations that are well lit or well populated and not crowded by bushes or buildings where offenders might hide.
Two years ago 299 vehicles were reported stolen and 1 220 cases of theft out or from motor vehicles were opened.
Last year 347 vehicles were stolen and 1 293 cases of theft out or from motor vehicles were opened.
